Prof. Colm-cille P. Caulfield

Professor

Colm-cille P. Caulfield is Professor of Environmental and Industrial Fluid Dynamics at the University of Cambridge, and a faculty member of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Flows (IEEF). He is also a Professorial Fellow in Mathematics at Churchill College, Cambridge. Prof. Caulfield’s research interests include turbulent mixing processes, particularly in the ocean, stratified flows more generally, flow instabilities and transition to turbulence, and turbulent plumes, as well as a wide range of industrial processes where turbulence is (potentially) significant. He is particularly interested in using appropriate combinations of laboratory experiments, numerical simulation, physical modelling and data-driven methods to gain insight into complex environmental systems.

Following postdoctoral training in the Department of Physics at the University of Toronto, Canada, and the Department of Engineering Science at Hokkaido University, Japan, he was a lecturer in the School of Mathematics at the University of Bristol, UK. Prof. Caulfield subsequently joined the faculty of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California at San Diego. Following tenure at UCSD, Prof. Caulfield joined the then BP Institute and the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge in 2005. Prof. Caulfield currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Fluid Mechanics, the leading journal of fluid dynamics and fluid physics, and as Head of DAMTP from January 2020 until September 2025. He was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society (Division of Fluid Dynamics) in 2014.
