Cambridge Energy Masterclass 2024

On Monday and Tuesday this week we hosted our annual Cambridge Energy Masterclass in the Centre for Mathematical Sciences. This very well-attended event offered an illuminating insight into the state-of-the-art understanding of many vital areas of the energy transition, with talks on everything from wind, solar, and nuclear power; to ammonia, hydrogen, and geothermal energy

A Symposium Celebration

On Thursday 28th December we hosted ‘A Symposium on Energy & Environmental Flows’ to celebrate Professor Andy Woods’ 60th birthday. It was a wonderful event, with a packed schedule of talks throughout the day on topics from volcanic eruptions, ocean circulation, glaciology, and carbon dioxide removal technologies, to ‘how to stop your Granny catching fire’!

A Trip to Parliament

Andy Woods and Nicola Mingotti showcased Institute research in parliament on Tuesday 26th November during a session at which the four national academies presented their research activities related to energy transition. They took with them an analogue experiment demonstrating the dissolution of Carbon Dioxide in a deep saline aquifer. Throughout the morning Andy and Nicola

Emily’s Insight into CCS Uncertainty

Today, PhD student Emily Flicos delivered our weekly seminar, with a presentation titled ‘CCS & permeability: thinking about uncertainty through a perturbation analysis’. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) has a crucial role to play in the journey to Net Zero and represents an enormous challenge due to the scale of storage that we must meet.

Registration Open for 2024 Cambridge Energy Masterclass

The Cambridge Energy Masterclass is a two-day intensive meeting of lectures and discussions, with talks from leading experts in various aspects of energy demand and supply. It focuses on the energy transition and the technologies needed to optimist new energy systems. The Masterclass takes place at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences on Wilberforce Road. This

The Gloves Are On!

Professor Alex Routh gave a fascinating seminar this week on the production process of rubber gloves. It’s a subject that not many of us think about, but the scale and significance of rubber glove manufacture is enormous. 300 billion latex gloves are produced globally every year, and the process is far from environmentally friendly or

New Lecture Course

Head of Institute starts new ‘Energy Masterclass’ lecture series as part of the ‘Energy Technology’ course for Cambridge chemical engineering students On Friday 11th October Professor Andy Woods gave the first lecture of his new Energy Masterclass lecture series for students taking the part IIB Energy Technology course in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology.

First Seminar of the Academic Year

Professor Andy Woods, Head of Institute, began our seminar series for Michaelmas term with a seminar titled ‘Fluid Mechanics Challenges of Large Energy Storage’. Andy began his talk by highlighting a simple yet crucial point: renewable energy supply is intermittent and energy demand is non-uniform, making energy storage innovations essential.  The talk then delved into
