First Seminar of the Academic Year

Professor Andy Woods, Head of Institute, began our seminar series for Michaelmas term with a seminar titled ‘Fluid Mechanics Challenges of Large Energy Storage’.

Andy began his talk by highlighting a simple yet crucial point: renewable energy supply is intermittent and energy demand is non-uniform, making energy storage innovations essential.

The talk then delved into the complexities of hydrogen storage and the multifaceted challenges associated with assessing optimal storage methods. Andy examined potential storage solutions in greater detail, including modelling parameters for optimising hydrogen storage in sedimentary rock anticlines, where issues like buoyancy and capillary losses must be considered. He concluded by discussing the promising potential of storing large amounts of thermal energy in aquifers, which could significantly improve recovery efficiency and minimise energy losses.

The attendees asked plenty of thought-provoking questions and the lunch afterwards was enjoyed by all.

Thank you to Andy for kicking off our seminar series for the term!
